I have discovered something else I love about being Catholic, although I would have preferred to discover this one in some other way.
My grandma died yesterday. It wasn't a huge surprise, she has been not good for quite awhile, but still it hits you. 
But I now understand how comforting it is to be able to pray for her. One of my first thoughts when I found out was I want to go to Mass and pray for her there. And I have prayed the "Prayer for the Faithfully Departed" a number of times since I found out.
This is so much better than being protestant. Then I could pray for my family and for myself, but that didn't really seem like "enough." But I didn't know what else to do. Now there is something tangible and specific I can do FOR my grandma as thanks for her love.
Eternal rest grant unto Grandma, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

I just wanted to say how sorry I was to hear that your Grandma has passed away; I will remember her and you and your family in my prayers.
It didn't come as a surprise, you say. But we're never ready for the avalanche of feelings and memories that rush upon us.
You have my sympathy in your loss. Your new-found Faith will see you through that, and already, you are fully participating with our dogma of praying for the dead.
I, too, pray that God will cleanse all the spots, stains and wrinkles from her garments, and welcome her into His Presence, where Perpetual Light will shine upon Her. May she rest in Peace

Have you thought about offering up a Mass for your Grandma? Just a thought:).
