Human and Divine

I love the song "Mary Did You Know?" It has such powerful lyrics and such interesting ideas.

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will one day walk on water?
Did you know
That your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know
That your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered
Will soon deliver you

As I was listening to this song last night, I wondered how much Mary really understood. Did she understand that Jesus was both human and divine? I mean the church fathers spent quite awhile debating exactly what Jesus was. Was he fully divine? A little of both? How does this all work out?

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Did you know
That your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know
That your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when you kiss your little boy
You’ve kissed the face of god

But then I thought, of all people, Mary must know the most about Jesus being both human and divine! She was the one with the angelic messengers. "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God" (Luke 1v35) is probabbly a good hint that he wasn't your average human. And at the same time, giving birth and changing his poopy diapers would knock down the divine part a little bit! So of all people, Mary must have been the MOST aware that holy mystery, Jesus being both fully divine and fully human.

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy is lord of all creation?
Did you know
That your baby boy will one day rules the nations?
Did you know
That your baby boy is heaven’s perfect lamb?
This sleeping child you’re holding
Is the great I am
